CBD and Caffeine: What Does Science Say?

You know that feeling when you've drunk too much coffee? You're a little sweaty, jittery, and you can feel your heart racing a bit too quickly?

What if there was a way to consume caffeine without overdoing it?

Some CBD enthusiasts say adding CBD to your coffee can take the jittery edge off — a way to stay energized and relaxed at the same time.

Do scientists agree? Let's dive in to learn more about mixing CBD and caffeine!

The 3 C's: Caffeine, CBD, and Coffee

Everyone knows drinking too much caffeine is not good. Yet, billions of people consume caffeine daily by drinking coffee or tea.

Caffeine can sometimes come with a long list of side effects like insomnia, restlessness, headache, anxiety, and much more.

Conversely, CBD has been studied on its use for depression, anxiety, arthritis, and inflammation. Yet, it wasn't until 2015 that the FDA allowed researchers to conduct trials with CBD. Preliminary findings have been rather positive, but the science is far behind the consumption of CBD we see today.

However, while there has not been a comprehensive study showing the effects of CBD, there is a consensus among scientists that CBD is safe. In fact, experts agree that CBD is probably a lot safer than overconsumption of caffeine. So, where does that leave CBD-infused coffee?

Scientists also agree that both caffeine and CBD play a role in interacting with the neurotransmitter called adenosine. Caffeine blocks adenosine from doing its job. The effect is that you feel awake when you should feel tired.

On the other hand, CBD has a much more complex interaction with adenosine. Adenosine is a chemical in the brain that promotes alertness and it builds up throughout the day making us feel tired.

Some researchers believe that CBD modulates adenosine in the brain.

It is possible that mixing caffeine and CBD allows the consumer to enjoy the alertness of caffeine without the adverse side effects. Regular CBD users have overwhelmingly stated precisely this!

It is important to keep in mind everyone is different. Therefore, what works for regular CBD users may not be best for everyone.

If you plan to enjoy CBD-infused coffee, make sure you start with a smaller serving and see how your body reacts. You can always increase the serving later on.

Remember, being over-caffeinated is unhealthy. So don't use CBD as a way to drink more coffee than you usually would. It can leave you feeling nauseous and unwell.

If you're unsure about combining CBD into your morning coffee, you can also try taking a few drops of CBD tincture oil under your tongue before you sip.

To Mix or Not to Mix?

As you can see, unfortunately, there is not a lot of finished scientific evidence behind whether mixing CBD and caffeine is beneficial.

But, most experts agree that mixing CBD into your coffee is unlikely to be harmful, assuming you don't overdo it.
