What is CBG?

CBG (called cannabigerol) is one of the many cannabinoids found in cannabis plants. You've likely heard of CBD and THC.

But CBG is considered a precursor to these other cannabinoids. CBG-A is the acidic form of CBG which breaks down to form CBG, CBD, THC, and CDC (another one of the minor cannabinoids).

CBG is often derived from young cannabis plants rather than fully developed ones. These younger cannabis plants produce a higher amount of CBG, but as they mature, more CBD and THC start to be produced.

Around CBG oil products, you'll find two main types of CBG - full spectrum and isolate.

Full spectrum CBG

If you're familiar with full spectrum CBD oils for pets and humans, then you know that full spectrum CBD oil contains all other cannabinoids found in cannabis plants. Well, the same applies to the full spectrum of CBG.

This includes all minor cannabinoids and compounds found in the cannabis plant. With all of these cannabinoids working together, the entourage effect is in full swing.

CBG isolate

CBG isolate, on the other hand, is just pure CBG. No other cannabinoids from the hemp plant are used so that CBG can remain as pure as possible.

Consult a doctor on cbg dosing or medical cannabis if you are taking prescription medications as cbg interacts with other drugs such as blood thinners

Although, it's not uncommon for products to combine CBG with other ingredients for taste and flavor. So always be sure to check the ingredients label on these isolate products.

How is CBG oil made?

CBG is extracted from hemp plants the same way that CBD and THC get extracted. It's just that now, the focus is on CBG.

Hydrocarbon extraction

Hydrocarbon extraction is considered the standard extraction method for high-THC cannabis concentrates. But for regular oils, whether derived from the hemp plant or not, this method is truly unnecessary.

Many reputable hemp companies don't use this method, especially in relation to both CBG and CBD due to the trace solvents it leaves. So if you see this extraction method being used, consider looking at other companies with less risky extraction methods.

Alcohol extraction

Alcohol extraction uses - you guessed it - alcohol to separate CBG from other cannabis plant material. But, like hydrocarbon extraction, it can also leave behind trace solvents.

Skilled manufacturers are typically able to filter these traces out to a safe level. And you'll be able to confirm this on third party lab reports.

CO2 extraction

CO2 extraction, on the other hand, is considered the gold standard for extracting all kinds of compounds from the hemp plant - the psychoactive compound THC, CBG, and CBD.

CO2 naturally filters itself out during the separation process so there's no issue of trace solvents in the final product. Furthermore, CO2 extraction helps to retain terpenes and cannabinoids, making for the most effective way to preserve the compounds found in the cannabis sativa plant.

How does CBG oil work?

CBG works the same way that CBD does. But in case you need a refresher, keep reading below.

CBG oils still access your cannabinoid receptors

Both CBD and CBG access the body's endocannabinoid system. And in this endocannabinoid system are molecules and receptors responsible for several different regulating bodily functions.

CBG benefits are currently under observation for treating bladder dysfunctions experimental inflammatory bowel disease chronic inflammation experimental therapeutics neuroprotective properties huntington's disease drug resistant staph infections and more

CBG imitates endocannabinoids which are natural compounds our body already makes. So, by binding to our CB1 and CB2 receptors, CBG is thought to strengthen the neurotransmitters in charge of our experiencing pleasure, motivation, appetite, sleep, pain, and more.

But it does not contain psychoactive effects

Unlike THC, CBG does not contain psychoactive properties. So you won't be getting high from the stem cell cannabinoid.

What's the difference between CBD and CBG?

As we already went over, CBG is a precursor to CBD, and so they share many similarities. But there are some subtle differences that differentiate these two cannabinoids from one another.

Similarities

Based on ongoing research, both CBG and CBD may contain certain anti-inflammatory effects as well as neuroprotective properties. Research has also explored how these cannabinoids affect appetite stimulation, cancer cell growth, energy, and focus.

Differences

On the other hand, CBG seems to be less potent than CBD. Although, initial research is finding that CBG may contain certain antibacterial properties among other antibacterial cannabinoids found in the hemp plant.

Researchers have found that CBG is more effective when paired with other cannabinoids such as THC or CBD. So it's likely that full spectrum products may be more effective than isolate products.

Potential health benefits of cbg have been associated with bacterial infections cancer cells nitric oxide production and well tolerated appetite stimulant in biochemical pharmacology

All in all, such research is still ongoing and therefore it's important to know all the information before trying any CBG or CBD products. With this in mind, it's additionally up to personal preference and how your unique body chemistry reacts with these two compounds.

FAQs about CBG

We know we're trying to pack a lot in here about all things CBG. But just in case you're left with a few lingering questions, we're here to help clear some of that confusion up.

Is CBG better than CBD?

This question comes up a lot. But in reality, neither CBG or CBD is better than the other.

We already explored how the two compounds are quite similar. But ultimately, whether CBG or CBD is better is up to personal preference as well as the desired effect you're looking for.

Research has shown the potential antibacterial properties found in CBG. So that gives it a particular edge that CBD is not necessarily known for.

Alternatively, CBD is often more potent than CBG. So if you desire that potency over other factors, then CBD is the way to go.

As you can see, there are many different factors that will help you determine whether CBG or CBD is right for you. So try to keep an open mind and acknowledge that each compound offers its own unique properties without diminishing the other.

How much CBG should I take?

When determining how much CBD or CBG you should take, you should always start small. There's no one-size-fits-all answer since everyone's body is unique.

To start, try measuring out .25mg to test how your body reacts. Then, gradually increase how much you consume from there.

Over time, you'll start to understand what works for your body. Besides, there are plenty of different products out there with CBG in it for you to explore!

Between tinctures, capsules, topical rubs, and edibles, you have plenty to choose from. And each will help you determine the right amount of CBG for you and your body.

Is CBG legal?

CBG is under the same laws as CBD. So as long as CBG is derived from hemp crops that contain less than 0.3% THC, it's federally legal in the US and Canada.

That being said, regulations on these cannabinoid compounds may vary from state to state. So it's important to check your local laws before assuming that it's legal.

Final thoughts

Hopefully by now, we've answered several questions you may have had from, "What is CBG" to "What does CBG do?" There's a lot to unpack in what most cannabis plants are able to offer.

So, as always, we're here to help you learn and explore all there is to know in the CBD (and CBG) world.
